Jack Donald Cockerham

Mr. Jack Donald Cockerham, 75, of Winston-Salem, NC passed away Saturday, November 23, 2013 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born May 1, 1938 in Forsyth County to the late Jack Q. and Ann Tesh Cockerham. Jack married Joan Faircloth on July 13, 1958 at Bethesda Moravian Church. He graduated from Griffith High School and attended Pfeiffer College. He joined the North Carolina National Guard in 1957 and was honorably discharged in 1964 with the rank of Sergeant E-5. Jack retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in 1994 as Director of Operations for the Whitaker Park and Tobaccoville manufacturing plants. He was an active member of Friedberg Moravian Church in Winston-Salem where he served in various leadership roles including Chairman of the Board of Trustees and member of the Building Committee for the Family Life Center. Jack had a lifelong passion for racing and propelled that passion into becoming part owner in a NASCAR Winston Cup team. Most importantly, Jack was a faithful Christian, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. His family was the center of his blessed life. Jack is survived by his wife, Joan; his daughter, Melissa Cockerham Flynt (Dwayne) and son Jack Donald Cockerham, Jr. (Lisa); two granddaughters, Katy Cockerham and Abby Ann Cockerham; three grandsons, Ross Flynt, Austin Flynt and Jack W. Cockerham; two sisters, Gail Ketner (Kenneth) and Judy Sink (Tom) and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at Friedberg Moravian Church in Winston-Salem, N.C. with the Rev. James C. Newsome, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends starting at 12:30 p.m. in the church parlor. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to Friedberg Moravian Church. The family would like to thank Dr. Timothy S. Collins, M.D. and the staff of the Derrick L. Davis Cancer Center, along with the nurses and staff on the 5th floor Oncology Unit at Forsyth Medical Center for the loving care of Jack during his illness.
