James "Jim" Bernerd Alspaugh, Sr., passed away on December 11, 2017. He was born in Clemmons, NC on May 31, 1932 to parents Bernerd Eugene Alspaugh and Gertrude Wuestoff Alspaugh. He was predeceased by his wife Hazel Ward Alspaugh and oldest son James Bernerd Alspaugh, Jr. He is survived by his two sons John Steven, and his wife Patricia Haden Alspaugh, of Virginia Beach, VA, and Donald Ward of Raleigh, NC; eight grandchildren, Brandon Alspaugh, Lindsay Boyce and husband Daniel Boyce, Kristen Stansfield and husband Gregory, Millicent Alspaugh, Matthew Alspaugh, Hudson Alspaugh, Griffin Alspaugh and Charleston Alspaugh; five great-grandchildren Isabelle, Holden, Lily Rose and Alexandra; and his sister Jean Crutchfield of Winston-Salem, NC.
Jim was a graduate of industrial engineering from North Carolina State University. He served the United States Air Force as a pilot with the rank of Captain. During his successful thirty-year career with Union Carbide Corporation, he worked in multiple locations including, Asheboro, NC, St. Albans, VT and Bay Village, OH. His position as an international production adviser and consultant also resulted in his working in Central and South America. After retirement, he started his second career in Winston-Salem, NC as a horse trainer, whose primary purpose was to provide training and care to Tennessee Walking Horses. A gentle and caring soul, he broadened the scope of his stable to provide hope to any breed of horse in need of a good home and brighter future.
A commemoration service and graveside service will be held at Pine Grove United Methodist Church, 1130 Jonestown Rd, Winston-Salem, NC at 1:00 PM, on Saturday December 16, 2017.
