Mr. James Bryant Barnard, formerly of Winston-Salem, passed away Friday, February 7, 2020 at the North Carolina State Veterans Home in Fayetteville.

A native of Iredell County, Jim was born October 29, 1927, a son of Hobert McKinley and Nizzie Renigar Barnard.  He attended Harmony School before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1944.  He served aboard the U.S.S. Little Rock, a light cruiser until 1946.  He also served in the U.S. Army beginning in 1948 during the Korean Occupation Forces and then in Japan for 15 months.  Soon after the start of the Korean War, he went back to Korea and was wounded in the battle for Bloody Ridge in August 1950, earning a Purple Heart for his bravery, and spent a year in hospitals, including the Walter Reed Medical Center.  In December 1950 he married his long-time sweetheart, Nellie Octavia Dalton, and in 1952 they returned to Winston-Salem and lived in Clemmons since 1964.  He was a long-time member of Clemmons First Baptist Church where he served as deacon, member of the Senior Choir and on various committees.  He was a member of Clemmons Masonic Lodge No. 755, A.M & F.M., the Winston-Salem Scottish Rite Bodies, Oasis Shrine and Clemmons Chapter #373, the Order of the Eastern Star.  For more than 25 years, Jim was employed at Modern Chevrolet Company.  Jim was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Nell; sisters, Catherine B. Kinder, Lucille B. Wagner, and Darlene B. Holcomb; and brother, Hobert Edwin Barnard.  He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

A Masonic graveside service with military honors will be held Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at 11 AM at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
