James Trent Carmichael (85) of Colfax, NC, died on September 30th, 2026, after a long illness. Born in Washington PA, he was the son of Beatrice and Paul Carmichael. He attended Washington High School where he met his future bride, Donna J Ullom. James (or Butch as he was known to family and friends) attended Penn State University graduating with a degree in business administration. Following PSU, Butch worked at Crucible Steel as an accounting trainee in the Pittsburgh office. He advanced through various positions within the Spring Division, and in 1966 was assigned to the Syracuse Works Division, in Syracuse NY. He eventually became Vice President of Finance.
While in the Syracuse community, Butch was active in scouting, as a softball coach, a Tel-Auc volunteer, and mentoring Junior Achievement. He was an avid golfer and loved golfing with friends and family. Butch retired after 30 years (at age 52!) with Crucible, always proud he stayed with the same company his entire career. After retirement, Butch and Donna spent winters in the Cherry Grove and Garden City areas of Myrtle Beach SC. In 2011, they retired permanently to North Carolina.
Butch is survived by his wife of 63 years, Donna; his children, James Jr (Maureen) of Georgia, Jeffrey (Celeste) of New York, and Beth of North Carolina; as well as eight grandchildren. He is predeceased by his brothers, Paul Jr, John, Walter, and Wray; as well as his son-in-law, Matthew Gee. A private service for family will be held at a later date.
