James "Don" Donald Murphy

James Donald Murphy, known by friends and family as “Don,” or “Donald,” passed away on the morning of July 29, 2025, at Countryside Manor in Stokesdale, NC.

Don was born on November 21, 1934, to Elijah Leonard Murphy and Dora Williams Murphy in Edgecombe County, NC. Don is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Margaret Beck Murphy and their daughter Kathryn Murphy Townsend, their son-in-law, Vince Townsend, and their grandsons Ryan, Peyton, and Benjamin Townsend.

Don was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Olga Murphy Ivey.

Don graduated from West Edgecombe County High School in 1953 and served in the US Army. After his service, Don worked briefly with the Southern Railroad, then worked at General Telephone for thirty years in Durham, NC where he made a home with his wife and daughter. Don and his family were members of the Bethany United Methodist Church where he enjoyed playing softball and dart-ball. Throughout his life he loved sports of all kinds, he enjoyed roller skating, table tennis, bowling, and dancing to bluegrass music. He loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed hiking along the Eno River.

Don was a kind and gentle soul; he never had a harsh word to say about anyone and always saw the good in people. He had a passion for sports history and history in general. The caregivers at Countryside Manor enjoyed discussing sports and history with Don right up until his last few days, Don was fortunate to keep his witty intellect until days before his last.

Don was a truly good man, those who knew Don considered him a friend, we will miss him.

A memorial service will be held on August 30, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Guilford College United Methodist Church, 1205 Fleming Road, Greensboro, NC, 27410. Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home Kernersville Chapel is assisting the family.
