James “Jim” Brewer, 89, passed away on the afternoon of Sunday, February 8, 2026. James H Brewer was born on November 15, 1936 to Ed and Pearl Brewer, the oldest of five children. Jim served his country in the U.S. ARMY and was a member of Grace Baptist Temple for 49 years. He retired from Mack Truck and was a long time member of the Odd Fellows Lodge. Jim was married for 64 years to Gail Poplin Brewer. They enjoyed traveling and spending time at the beach and the mountains. They had three children. Matthew, Cindy, and Jason. He was a member of a large family and had many friends. Jim is an unforgettable man. Jim’s passion was stock car racing. He raced for many years at Bowman Gray Stadium from the late 50’s until the mid 70’s. Jim drove the number 80 affectionately known as “Ole Yellar”. He was the North Carolina State Hobby Champion in 1969. Jim loved talking racing and enjoyed sharing tales of racing at tracks around the state. He loved sports and especially liked playing golf with his son and fellow church members. Jim was an avid gardener. Jim was predeceased by his parents; oldest son Matthew; a brother, Butch Brewer and two sisters, Eva Tuttle and Irene Freeman. He is survived by his wife, Gail; his daughter, Cindy Collins (Chuck) and his son, Jason. Jim had two granddaughters, Allison Snow and Lauryn Brewer and two great grandchildren, Kinsley and Colton Snow. He is also survived by one sister, Eula Sapp (Gary); two brothers in law, Gene Poplin and Wiley Tuttle; one sister-in-law, Barbara Brewer and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 12, 2026 at Grace Baptist Church with Pastor Jim Bush officiating. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
