James Edgar Layton

James Edgar Layton, 82, of Winston-Salem, passed away March 11, 2026.

Mr. Layton was born September 1, 1943, in Monmouth County, NJ, to Edgar Layton and Ruth Elizabeth Vorhees Layton. In addition to his parents James was preceded in death by a brother, Richard.

James served in the US Navy as an aviation electronics technician from 1961 to 1966. He was a 1971 graduate of Monmouth University where he earned a degree in mathematics. After graduation he joined Western Electric / Lucent Technologies. Later in his career as a programmer, he retired from IBM. In his spare time, Mr. Layton was an avid antique automobile collector and target shooter.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Linda Layton; a brother, Gary R. Layton; a son, James C.W. Layton and wife, Heather; a daughter, Catharine E. Layton; and four grandchildren.

A private graveside service will be held at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church.
