James Michael Mecum, Sr.

James Michael “Mike” Mecum, Sr was born to Edith Shook Mecum and John B. Mecum, Sr. on Nov. 20, 1944, in Iredell County, N.C. He passed away on May 3, 2023, after a long and courageous battle with myelodysplastic syndrome. He was a graduate of Griffith High School in Winston-Salem. His life work was in the plumbing industry in Winston-Salem and he was often sought after for his quality work. His lifelong passion has been cooking and after retirement he opened Mike’s Homemade Ice Cream in Winston-Salem. He found immense joy in serving others through gifts of food and his ice cream. He was a devoted member of Fraternity Church of the Brethren.

Mike is preceded in death by his spouse of 46 years, Linda Holyfield Mecum; and brothers Jerry Mecum and John B. Mecum. Mike is survived by daughter Wendy (Bob) hicks; son Michael Mecum and Linda’s children, daughter Susan Draughn Eads; son Kenneth Edward Draughn and grandchildren Austin Hicks, Lexie Hicks and Madison Draughn.

A celebration of Mike’s life will be held Sunday May 7, 2023, at 3pm at Fraternity Church of the Brethren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fraternity Church of the Brethren or Trellis Supportive Care. The family will receive friends immediately after the service.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Trellis Supportive Care, the sweet staff at The Southwood and Dr. Jan Moreb and Michelle at Novant Hematology Clinic.
