James Kenneth Prater

Mr. James Kenneth ""Kenny"" Prater, 73, left for his home in heaven on June 24, after a two-year struggle with Lewy Body Dementia. He was born May 5, 1944 in Forsyth Co. to James Dykes and Maddline Crim Prater. He graduated from Walkertown High School, was employed by Pilot Freight Carriers in Kernersville NC for 20 years and owned KenCo Grading for 25 years. He continued to work until his health no longer permitted. He was recognized by those who knew him as an extremely dedicated, hardworking man. He loved part-time farming and raised farm animals and horses. In addition, he enjoyed antique cars and driving his restored 1957 Chevy BelAir, proudly displaying it at car shows and in parades.

He was active in churches, among other things he had served as a Deacon and participated in mission trips and projects. At his death, he had been a faithful member of Triad Baptist Church in Kernersville for over 20 years. He was a member of the Gideons International Southeast for several years.

Kenny was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ronnie Prater. He is survived by his devoted wife, Sandra Prater. Also surviving son, Keith Prater (Penny) of Kernersville; daughter, Shannon Warden (Stephen) of Walkertown; son Shawn Prater of Charlotte; the grandchildren he adored, Dylan and Holly Prater, and Avery, Carson, and Presley Warden; his sister, Cheryl Prater MacFarland (Jerry) and Aunt, Juanita Crim of Belews Creek; aunt, Betty Lou Crim of Pilot Mountain; aunt, Dorothy Majors of Cambell, Missouri; and brother and sister in-law, Ronnie and Jan Griffin of Germanton.

A service will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel with Dr. Rob Decker officiating and Pastor Tim Gerber. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM prior to service at the funeral home. A private burial will be held at Mt. Gur Cemetery in Kernersville, NC.
