James Richard Proctor, 81, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Sunday, May 3, 2026. He was born in Mohave County, Arizona, on December 8, 1944, to the late James Fredrick Proctor and Nellie Louise Williams Proctor. James loved the outdoors, and found joy in golfing, fishing, and watersports. In his younger days, his competitive spirit shined through his many games of pool, and in his later years through bridge with family and friends. James was a well-educated man and valued the education system immensely. He graduated from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with his bachelor’s degree in mathematics and computer science. More than anything, he had an immense love for his family. James and his devoted wife were high school sweethearts and were inseparable from age 16 until death. James spent over 16 years caring for Shirley when she developed Alzheimer’s and needed assistance. He will be remembered for the role he took on as an incredible husband, father, and grandfather. He will be missed immensely by those who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife, Shirley Anne Williams Proctor; as well as his brother, Ricky Dessie Proctor.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Ashley Proctor Young of Greensboro; two sons, Wesley Todd Proctor (Ingrid) of Stokesdale, and Bryon Keith Proctor of Belews Creek; three grandchildren, Colby Todd Proctor, Carly Anne Maness, Sydney Marie Proctor; as well as a sister, Delores Proctor Hire (Steve).
A visitation will be held from 6-8 PM on Monday, May 11, 2026, at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Foundation of America at 322 8th Avenue, 16th Floor, New York, NY 10001.
