Mr. James Bernard Slate, 90, of Winston-Salem passed away Sunday, September 30, 2018 at Salemtowne. Mr. Slate was born in Patrick County Virginia to the late Melvin W. Slate and Nina E. Collins Slate on December 25, 1927. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. James served in The United States Marines 1946-1947 and The United States Army 1951-1953. He graduated from Catawba College where he played football and was team captain. He worked several of his summers at North Carolina Baptist Assembly at Ft. Caswell and was part of the staff that moved Ft. Caswell to its current location. He retired from Quality Oil Company with more than 50 years of service. Along with his parents, Mr. Slate was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Rosa Lee Satterwhite Slate; three brothers, Thomas; Bill and Dan Slate. He is survived by his sons, James Slate Jr. (Robyn) and Thomas Slate (Sharon); daughter, Laura Lee Slate (David Ball); grandchildren, Elizabeth Slate; Thomas Slate; William Slate and Meredith Avery; sister-in-law, Maggie Slate and Ann Slate; brother-in-law, Tom Satterwhite (Carolyn), and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 12:00 noon Monday, October 8, 2018 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Christa Warise officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior. Burial will be held 2:30 PM at Oakdale Cemetery, Mt. Airy, NC.
