Mr. James “Jamie” Franklin Wilkes, 84, of Winston-Salem, passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at home peacefully surrounded by his family.
A celebration of life will be held from 1-3 PM Monday, January 29, 2024, at Hayworth-Miller, Silas Creek Chapel in the Robert F. Miller Center.
Mr. Wilkes was born January 28, 1939, in Forsyth County, to Ray Odell Wilkes and Robina Wooten Wilkes. Jamie was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as an MP. He was employed at Sportmans Supply Company and then opened up Jamie Wilkes Trophies, a successful family business serving the greater Winston-Salem area for 32 years. Jamie was a beloved football coach, admired by his players. He also had a passion for refinishing old furniture and selling at the flea market at Hillsville, VA. His kindness reached out and touched so many in our community and will be greatly missed. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Melba Osborn; and brothers, Milton Wilkes, and Bob Wilkes.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 63 years, Judith Doss Wilkes; one daughter, Kelly Brinkley (Kevin) of Clemmons; one son, Thad Wilkes (Gabriel) of New York; two grandsons, Quintin Brinkley, and Zach Brinkley; two sisters, Norma Shultz of Lexington, and Ramona Branscomb of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Debbie (Wright) Feld, and the angels of Mountain Valley Hospice. He also treasured his friendships with his Western Carolina Football family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Mountain Valley Hospice 3069 Trenwest Drive Winston-Salem, NC 27103, or to the Western Carolina Football Program.
