KERNERSVILLE – James Thomas “Tom” Hastings, 87, passed away peacefully Friday, February 22, 2019, at Hospice of the Piedmont. Tom was born on December 15, 1931 in Forsyth County to Henry Lake and Carline Money Hastings. He was a veteran of the US Army and retired from Western Electric (AT&T) with over 36 years of service.
Tom was a founding member of Beeson Crossroads Fire Department, proudly serving the department and community for 63 years. He was a devoted Atlanta Braves fan and loved spending time with his golf buddies. Tom was a simple man – a man of truth and sincerity – who dearly loved his family. His kindred spirit and positive influence is treasured by many.
In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Hastings; two brothers, Norman and Houston Hastings; three sisters, Geraldine Swaim, Wanda Morris, and Laura Yow.
Surviving are his daughter, Linda Martin (Buddy); a grandson, Tyler Martin; a step granddaughter, Angie Welborn; two great step-grandchildren, Bricen and Abbie Welborn; many loving nieces, nephews and extended family; and special friend, Janet Wilson, that had a special place in her heart for Tom.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob McCaskill officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1803 Westchester Lane, High Point, NC 27262. Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel is assisting the family.
