Janean Lee Kennedy

Janean Lee Kennedy, 75, passed away on Nov. 12, 2013, following a rapid decline in health that began in March of this year. Born April 5, 1938, she was the oldest of 12 children born to Walter and Mary Kennedy of Altoona, Pa. Janean met and married Richard ""Mickey"" Flack, a Western Electric technician, in 1956, and they lived in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Texas and Maryland before settling with their six children in Winston-Salem in 1968. They adopted their seventh child from the Methodist Home for Children in Winston-Salem in 1973. While self-employed as a wall-covering hanger, she met and married Hugh Kennedy in 1981. After all of her children left home, she enrolled at N.C. A&T University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in English in 1987 and a master's degree in English in 1990. She taught freshman English at A&T for the next 17 years, and later taught English and technical writing at community colleges in both Guilford and Forsyth counties, before retiring in 2012. Janean spent her life in service to others, as a wife, mother and grandmother, and as a devoted teacher. She was a joyful person who never met a stranger, and she loved nothing more than to teach and inspire others. She also loved to bring beauty to the world by expressing her creativity in a multitude of ways including cooking, gardening, sewing, dancing, singing and painting. She was preceded in death by her brother, Paul and sister, Mary Jo, and her grandson, Ian Flack. Janean is survived by her children, Colleen, Melissa, Denise, Leslie, Richard, Julie and Jonathan, and nine of her 11 brothers and sisters, Larry (Pattie) - SC, David (Anna May), Sharon (Leonard), Claudia (Russ) - PA, Lavina - NC, Don (April) - MD, Beth (Kelvin) - CA, Chris (Lisa) - NC, Emily (Scott) - SD, both of her husbands; 18 of her 19 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. The family will receive friends Friday, Nov. 15, 2013 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway. A funeral service will be held Saturday, Nov. 16, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a graveside service at Parklawn Memorial Park on Peters Creek Parkway. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home for the compassionate care given to their beloved mother. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be sent in the form of donations to Brenner Children's Hospital or Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.
