Janie Watson Hicks, 78 of King, North Carolina, passed away on Friday, March 20, 2026. She was surrounded by her family and passed peacefully at home. She was born in Surry County to the late Fred and Lucy Brintle Watson.
Janie was a devoted wife of 57 years to her beloved husband Samuel Moyer (Moe) Hicks, who survives her. She was a loving mother to her two children, Kim Palmer (Junior) and Jeffery Hicks (Michelle). She was a proud grandmother to Brittney Matthis (Brian), Ryley Hicks, Madison Hicks, Brendan Hicks (Jenny). She was also a cherished great-grandmother to Miles. Janie also shared a continued bond with Jeffery’s former spouses, Angela Priddy and Melanie Hicks, and welcomed his current wife’s daughters Victoria Meadows and Taylor Strickland (Cody) and her children Jasper, Cedar, Fox and Chase as part of the family as well.
Janie is also survived by her sister, Barbara Lawson (Don), and her brother, George Watson. She was preceded in death by her sister, Brenda Hawkins (Steve Yontz), her sister, Mary Perrel (J.D.), her brother, Gray Watson (Gail) and a sister-in-law, Helen Watson. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, and countless friends who loved her dearly.
Janie was the definition of selfless love. She would do anything for anyone without hesitation or judgment. A devout Christian, she found great comfort and strength in her faith and could often be found reading her Bible daily. She lived her life with quiet grace and unwavering kindness, always putting others before herself. As a member and founder of Our Christian Heritage Church in Walkertown, she served as the church treasurer and Sunday School Teacher.
Janie retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 35 years of service. She had a passion for crafting and canning, and her quilts were truly works of art—each one made with care, patience, and love. Through her hands and her heart, she created not only beautiful things, but lasting memories for those she loved.
Janie faced Cancer with strength and peace, holding firmly to her faith and the promise of eternal life. She found comfort in knowing she was going home.
Above all, Janie will be remembered as a woman who embodied unconditional love. Her legacy will live on in the lives she touched, the family she cherished, and the love she gave so freely.
A Celebration of Janie’s Life will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Our Christian Heritage Church, 2051 Old Hollow Rd., Walkertown, NC 27051. The family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the Doctors and staff at Duke Medical Center, Novant Health and lastly Trellis Supportive Care for all of the wonderful care shown to Janie during her time of need.
