Mr. Jeremiah ""Jerry"" Frank Johnson of Winston-Salem, died Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at Salemtowne Retirement Community. He was born July 8, 1929 in Winston-Salem, the son of Harris Guthrie Johnson, Sr. and Zylphia Messer Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a lifetime member of Central Terrace United Methodist Church. He graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School in 1948, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from High Point University and did graduate study at Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He began his teaching career at Midway School in Davidson County, where his mother had been a long-time teacher. He taught for a short time at Sedge Garden School in Forsyth County and then finished his career at Summit School in Winston-Salem. Mr. Johnson's other career was in music, which was his passion. He studied music at Salem College and became organist and music director at many churches: Grace Episcopal Church in Lexington, First Baptist Church in Mt. Airy, Maple Springs Methodist Church, and Friedland, Olivet and Ardmore Moravian Churches in Winston-Salem, and many others for short periods of time. Mr. Johnson was a great lover of flowers and other plants. He grew orchids in his greenhouse for many years and loved sharing them with friends. He loved animals and always seemed to have a pet around. He also loved to travel and planned many trips for his family and friends. Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents; his only brother, Harris G. Johnson, Jr.; and brother-in-law, Eugene Perryman. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Edna Perryman Johnson; sisters-in-law, Martha Johnson and Jane Strehlow; and many loving nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted 2:00 PM Sunday February 23, 2014 at Salemtowne Retirement Community with Rev. Linda Brown officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, which Mr. Johnson dearly loved, memorials may be made to Salemtowne Retirement Community, 1000 Salemtowne Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.
