Jessie Farmer

Jessie Hawkins Farmer, age 94, passed away on August 25, 2017 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House in Winston-Salem, NC. Jessie was born on February 13, 1923 to the late Dan and Blanche Hawkins in Roanoke, VA. Soon after, they moved to Independence, VA, which became their home. Jessie graduated from Independence High School. She was a homemaker and a church volunteer and then retired from the Rooftop of Virginia, a non-profit crafter's association whose proceeds benefited the community. Jessie loved life, was faithful to her church, Brindle Creek Methodist, where she sang in the choir, kept the Memorials record book and was active in the WMC fellowship. She also served in the Ladies V.F.W. Auxiliary. In addition to her parents, Jessie was preceded in death by her husband Claude. They celebrated 70 years of marriage before his passing in 2012. Also, preceding her were younger siblings, Beulah H. Ward and Dan Warren Hawkins; and her grandson, Eric Warren Snyder. She is survived by her two daughters, Barbara and husband Larry and Evelyn and husband James, all of Winston-Salem, NC; grandson, Doug Snyder of Wilmington, NC; and special sister-in-law, Virginia R. Hawkins of Independence, VA. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at Bridle Creek Methodist Church in Independence, VA. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service. Jessie's ashes, along with those of her husband, will be interred at a later time at Saddle Creek Cemetery in a private family service. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her honor may be made to the Bridle Creek Methodist Church, c/o Peggy Haga, P.O.
