Jessie O'Neil Fowler

KERNERSVILLE- Jessie O'Neil Fowler, 93, passed away December 23, 2013. She was born February 10, 1920 in Carrsville, VA to the late James Randolph and Lela Williams Fowler. Jessie graduated from Carrsville High School class of 1937. In 1939, she entered Averette College and graduated with a Degree in Teaching. She continued her education, graduating from William & Mary with a Bachelor of Science in education. She was also a member of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, graduating Alpha Delta Pi honor society. For the next 44 years Miss Fowler would teach & mentor young people until her retirement. Over the years she would receive letters from her students thanking her for everything she taught them and to have cared enough to go the extra mile. After retirement Jessie volunteered 20 years of her time to various organizations. Jessie became well known in the Kernersville community for her honesty and integrity. She once found eight one hundred dollar bills in a jacket she purchased from Goodwill and immediately returned it to the store. Because of her act of honesty she was recognized as the guest of honor at the annual Goodwill Industries conference and later received a plaque from Governor Jim Hunt. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by, one brother and five sisters. Surviving are her nephew, Earl Johnson of the home and Vann Johnson of Suffolk, VA; great nieces and nephews, Earl (Randy) Johnson, Tracy Handy, Mark and wife, Gerry Johnson, Lori Martin, Kim Martin and husband, Greg. A Memorial Service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January, 5, 2014 at Bunker Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. David Rorie officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bunker Hill United Methodist Church in memory of Jessie Fowler, 1510 Bunker Hill-Sandy Ridge Rd., Kernersville NC 27284 or Hospice and Palliative Care Center,101 Hospice Lane, Winston Salem, NC 27103. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Hospice & Palliative Care Center, Nurse Roxanne Rothrock and her caregiver, Jessie Bennett, who always had a smile on their face and a song in their heart.
