Joanne Bailey Federchuck

Joanne Bailey Federchuck, 89, of Winston-Salem, NC passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones on November 15, 2025.

Born on March 4, 1936, in Atlanta, GA to Russell and Marie Bailey, Joanne was raised in several mid-Atlantic states, with the family ultimately settling in Utica, NY.

Joanne was a special education major and graduate of Syracuse University where she met the love of her life and husband of 67 years, Robert Alexis Federchuck (Bob). Their life together initially took them to Durham, NC where she taught for several years at the NC Cerebral Palsy Hospital. The young couple eventually welcomed three daughters over four years’ time as Joanne devoted her days (and nights) to full time motherhood. Once ready to resume her career outside the home she wore many hats including kindergarten teacher, Brownie troop leader, Wake Forest University Alumni Office assistant, Winston-Salem Ronald McDonald House manager, member of the board of directors of the Robinhood Road YMCA, and volunteer teaching ESL with the El Buen Pastor program.

A charter member and elder at Shallowford Presbyterian Church in Lewisville, she loved singing both in her church choir and in the annual performance of Handel’s Messiah sponsored by the Winston-Salem Mozart Club.

Joanne will be remembered as a woman of unwavering faith and loyal servant to God, always stressing the importance of dedicating oneself to serving others. Throughout recent years of declining health, she maintained her grace, compassion, love of family and friends and, most importantly, her appreciation of and love for her husband, Bob.

In addition to her husband she is survived by daughters Janice Brown (Thom), Julie Dawson (John), and Jeannie Sekits (Paul); five grandchildren, Tim Federchuck (Amber), Jessica Jordan (Blake), Robbie Dawson, Lucas Brown (Alexandra Worth), and Amber Tullock (Logan Hampton); seven great-grandchildren, Nick, Nate, Brylie, Ivy, Storm, Summit, and Lincoln; and special cousins Anne Mackey and Annette Weidner. She was predeceased by her parents, Russell Dale Bailey and Mary Irene (Marie), Harry Bailey and by Erika Fifelski Dawson.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Joanne’s special caregivers Brittany, Jasmine, and Keisha for their compassion, kindness, and the tender care they provided and to the Shallowford church family for the meals, visits, prayers and support over the past few years.

A celebration of life will be held at their church in mid-December with details to follow shortly. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shallowford Presbyterian Church (online at shallowfordpresbyterian.org or mailed to the church: 1200 Lewisville Clemmons Road Lewisville, NC 27023) or to the Winston-Salem Mozart Club (online at wsmessiah.org or mailed to: Mozart Club PO Box 5041 Winston-Salem, NC 27113). Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
