Joe Newman

Mr. Joe Taylor Newman, 83, passed away Monday, June 17, 2019.  He was born July 24, 1935 in Rockingham County to the late Robert Thomas Newman and Alice Mintoria Bowman Newman.  Joe proudly served his country in the United States Army National Guard.  He was a retired brick mason and tobacco farmer.  Joe had the best sense of humor and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.  In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Denny Newman; two daughters, Dawn R. Newman and Shannon G. Newman; step-son, Hilton R. Priddy; and seven siblings.  He is survived by two daughters, Carmon N. Selvey (James) and Tammy N. Lindon; step-son, Arlen Priddy; four grandchildren: Brittni L. Gobble (Jon), Brandon M. Lindon, Victoria S. Tamer (Matthew), and Catherine S. Tucker (Cory); and six great-grandchildren: Jensen, Hudson, Lana, Eleanor, Evelyn, and John-Thomas.  A funeral service will be conducted 3:00 pm Wednesday, June 19, at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel with the Rev. John Pittman officiating.  Burial will follow at Mount Olive Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 pm Tuesday, June 18, at the funeral home.  The family would like to extend a special thank you to Mountain Valley Hospice and Universal Healthcare-King for the exceptional care given to Joe.
