John Bates, Jr.

Mr. John Payton Bates, Jr., of Winston-Salem NC, passed away suddenly on Friday March 16, 2018. John was born in Winston-Salem on May 3, 1968. John is survived by his wife Joan Pearce Bates and his daughters Elizabeth Ann Bates and Sydney Ellis Bates; his mother Ann C. Wood; his father John Payton Bates, Sr. and wife Eloise; stepsisters Ellen Fox and Sue Rice; his uncle Joe Causby and wife Sandra. John will be remembered as a loving father who doted on his daughters and was always available to help anyone with a project. His cheerfulness and smile was appreciated regardless of the difficulty of the project. John was an honor graduate of R. J. Reynolds High School and a Cum Laude graduate of University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He had a very successful insurance career before he found his true calling to be a gym owner and developer of computer software. In addition to his work life, John received so much pleasure from his work with Forsyth Park Baptist Church as a Deacon and their business manager. John did all he could to make this small church a success in the community and will be greatly missed. A funeral service will be conducted at 12:00 Noon on Thursday, March 22, 2018, at Forsyth Park Baptist Church with Pastor Tom Southern officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Forsyth Park Baptist Church, 1600 South Hawthorne Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, the Forsyth Humane Society, 4881 Country Club Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27104, or City with Dwellings, 633 West Fourth Street. Winston-Salem, NC 27101.
