Mr. John Thurman Brady, Sr., 87, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at 1:45 p.m. Sunday, October 2, 2016. John T. was born the youngest of six children to Will Brady and Sally Frances Stalls Brady in Martin County, NC. He attended school in Beaufort County, NC before enlisting in the United States Navy at the age of 16. He served aboard the USS Columbus, CA-74 during World War II. After being honorably discharged, he lived in Greenville, NC for a short time. He bought a bus ticket and went to Gadsden, AL to visit his brother and family. He enrolled in the Gadsden School of Business and got a job delivering groceries on a bicycle, which is how he met Nellie Brown and married her on January 22, 1948. After having their first child, Peggy and living in Alabama for three years, they moved to Winston-Salem, NC in 1952 to their first home on Poplar St. John T. worked as a meat cutter at Big Star Food Stores and participated in the opening of new stores. After retiring from Big Star, he worked for Joston Publishing Company as a security guard and part-time at Grandview Grocery Store. One of their happiest memories was the cruise they took to the Bahamas with ten of their friends for their 50th wedding anniversary. John T. and Nellie Brady shared 60 wonderful years together and he will be greatly missed. John T. Brady, Sr. was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Geneva and Nancy; three brothers: Bill, Willie, and James; four daughters: Peggy, Carolyn, Karen, and Kathy; one son, John, Jr. ""Jay""; one granddaughter, Dawn D. Francisco; one great-grandson, Johnny. John T. is survived by his wife, Nellie Brady; granddaughter, Tammy L. Tyree; great-granddaughter, Jasmine Elaine ""Lanie"" Reed; great-granddaughter-in-law, Christy deBogdan; two great-grandsons, Jayden and Cameron deBogdan; one son-in-law, James E. Reed; one grandson-in-law, James L. Francisco; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and their children. A memorial service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 6, at Poplar Springs Church of Christ with Don Wallace, Minister officiating.
