John William Jones

Mr. John William Jones, 74, of Advance, NC, passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2015, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center after suffering a stroke. Mr. Jones was born on May 19, 1941, to the late John William Jones and June Widger Jones. Originally from Parkersburg, WV, he graduated with a bachelor's degree from the University of Florida followed by a master's degree in Management Information Systems from the University of North Florida. John served his country in the United States Army from 1966 until his honorable discharge as a Captain in 1969. He served as the MIS Director for Forsyth County, NC, the City of Saint Petersburg, FL, as well as the City of Monroe, NC. John was always active in church where you could find him teaching, singing, serving as a Deacon, and playing his baritone. He loved to travel, especially to New York City where he enjoyed good food, Broadway, The US Open, and the bustling streets of the city. John was a faithful Gator Alum traveling to Gainesville often and chasing his Gators around the country in pursuit of Championships. He was a computer nut and loved to play online games especially Sudoku. Although retired, John most recently served as an Ambassador at Baptist Hospital, helping other people in their time of need. John was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather who loved to cheer on his grandsons in their athletic pursuits. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Oliff L. Jones; son, Barry D. Jones and wife, Kelly of Cary, NC; grandsons, Austen and Colten; son, Justin S. Jones and wife, Stefanie of Clemmons, NC; grandsons, Jon David and Eli; one sister, Joan Crow of Ocean Springs, MS; two brothers, Rob Jones and wife, Carolyn of Knoxville, TN, and Ross Jones and wife, Linda of Cartersville, GA; numerous nieces and nephews; and several close friends from St. Petersburg, FL and the Winston-Salem area that have shared countless memories with the family over the years. A memorial service celebrating John's life will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, December 29, 2015, at Ardmore Baptist Church with Dr. Don Gordon officiating. A visitation with family will be held from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Monday, December 28, 2015, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
