John Thomas (J.T.) Mabe, 96,
passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 6, 2016 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Stokes County, NC on March 28, 1920 to Drew and Lona Mabe.
In addition to his parents, J.T. was preceded in death by brothers, Cletus, Guindolyn and Denson Mabe.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Isley Mabe, sister Marie Marshall, brother Allen Mabe (Lorraine) as well as many nieces, nephews and in-laws.
J.T. married Dorothy Isley on November 19, 1941 and they were just six weeks shy of their 75th wedding anniversary. She loved to cook, he loved to eat; a match made in heaven. During WWII, J.T. served as a machine gunner in Europe in the 319th Battalion 80th Division of the 3rd Army. He transferred to the 407th 1st Division achieving the rank of staff sergeant. Interestingly, he enjoyed excellent hearing all his life despite his service.
J.T. retired from Bob Neil Pontiac in Winston-Salem, NC. He was a member of Walkertown First Baptist Church for many years. Having been raised on a farm, J.T. was an avid gardener, planting a garden every year, including this year.
J.T. was a constant source of support for his parents, wife, siblings, in-laws, nieces and nephews for the better part of a century. His home was open to everyone. He enjoyed visiting with friends and relatives, asking, ""What's your hurry?"" when they started to leave. He will be remembered with great love, honor, respect and gratitude. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at Gardens of Memory Mausoleum Chapel.
