John Edgar Oakley, Jr.

John Edgar Oakley, Jr., age 85, passed away on May 4, 2012, in Lewisville, NC, after a brave and valiant eight year battle with Alzheimer's disease. A native of Petersburg, VA, he was the son of the late Bertha Shannon Oakley and John Edgar Oakley, Sr., and is survived by his wife of 62 years, Cecelia Grigg Oakley, and two children John E. Oakley, III, and wife, Cathy Hubbard, of North Myrtle Beach, NC, and Cecelia Mason Oakley Gray, of Lewisville, NC. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Christopher B. Oakley, M.D. and wife, Heather, of Odenton, MD; John E. Oakley, IV, of Alexandria, VA; Jennifer Mason Gray of Columbia, SC, and Joshua Cleveland Gray of Miami, FL, and one great-grandson, Brandon Charles Oakley of Odenton, MD. In addition, he is survived by a sister, Newanna O. Anderson of Petersburg and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Oakley was a graduate of Petersburg High School, a veteran of World War II serving in the Navy and attended Georgia Institute of Technology. He began his insurance career with Liberty Mutual Insurance Company in Norfolk. VA in 1950. Following cremation, a Memorial Service will be held at Christ and Grace Episcopal Church, in Petersburg, VA, with interment in the Memorial Garden on Friday May 11th at 12:00 noon. Memorial donations would be appreciated to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home,101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, N. C. 27103, which made his last years ones of comfort and compassion. The family gratefully acknowledges the faithful assistance of his special team of CNAs and Hospice nurses: Tracy Hill, Sandra Ledford, Melinda Mabe, Meranda Hicks, Roger Hundley, Tina Gladden, Jerry Boltz, and Jennifer Hage.
