John Thomas Roberts, 90, died early in the morning Wednesday, January 27th with his devoted wife, B.J., by his side. Mr. Roberts was born July 21, 1925 in Mount Airy, NC, son of the late Logan T. Roberts and Charity Callam Roberts. He was a graduate of White Plains High School in Mount Airy and Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, NC. He began his career at the North Carolina Granite Company in Mount Airy. Later, he worked for Western Electric Company and Larson & Larson Architects in the city. He accepted a position with the City of Winston-Salem, retiring in 1987 as Director of Housing Codes and Authority. Mr. Roberts was predeceased by his first wife, Elizabeth Burroughs Roberts; daughter, Sherry Roberts Biallas; brothers, Charles and Gray Roberts; and sister, Josephine Roberts Smith. He is survived by his beloved wife, Bobbie Jean Boatwright Roberts of the home (formerly of Florence, SC); a son, Greg Roberts of Winston-Salem; twin grandsons, Ian and Ryan Biallas of Kailua Kona, Hawaii; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Roberts also leaves to cherish his memory a multitude of family and friends who loved and admired this true southern gentleman. Services for Mr. Roberts will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, January 31, 2016 at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, 3315 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC, with Rev. Gwendolyn Holly officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lees-McRae College, P.O. Box 128, Banner Elk, NC 28604.
