John Nathan Templeton Jr., 85, of Winston-Salem, passed away at his home on Friday, July 19, 2024. The family will receive friends from 3-5 PM Thursday, July 25, 2024, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Silas Creek. John was born February 20, 1939, in Forsyth County, to John Nathan Templeton Sr. and Ruby Culler Templeton. Following his graduation from Glenn High School in 1957, John began his military career. He served in the US Air Force and US Army, including two tours in Vietnam, retiring in 1981. John was a very proud father, and his “Grands” were his very eyeballs. He was a member of First Assembly for over 30 years, but most recently attended Faith Church in Midway as long as his health permitted. John was a life member of the DAV, VFW Kernersville Post #5352, AMVETS of Welcome, the Order of the Eastern Star- Honolulu, Hawaii Chapter, Summerville, SC Masonic Lodge, Alee Shriners of Savannah, GA, and the Scottish Rite of Charleston, SC. After retirement, John worked for USPS in Charleston, SC, before returning to his “roots” in aviation. He worked for Gulfstream in Savannah, GA, then Piedmont Aviation, eventually retiring from U.S. Air. After retiring, John enjoyed purchasing and restoring bikes for many, many kids without one. He also enjoyed coaching little league baseball, with his “boys” winning several championships. Always one to think of others before himself, he was a blood and platelet donor for many years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Shirley; and two brothers-in-law, Garner Mahaffey, and “Doc” Mabe. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Ann; one son, Dr. John Nathan Templeton III (Dawn); two grandchildren, Hayden Elizabeth Templeton, and John Nathan Templeton IV; two sisters, Peggy Reece (Ralph), and Barbara Mahaffey; sister-in-law, JoAnn Mabe; brother in law, David Mabe (Barbara), six nieces; and five nephews; many great-nephews and nieces, as well as numerous friends. The family will receive friends from 3-5 PM Thursday, July 25, 2024, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Silas Creek. The family would like to thank his many doctors and the nurses and CNAs at Trellis Supportive Care for their support and kindness. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to VFW Kernersville Post #5352, DAV, Folds of Honor, or Toys for Tots. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com
