Mr. Johnny Fuel Southern, 87, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at Forsyth Medical Center surrounded by his family.
Johnny was born to the late James Floyd Southern and Alice Jane Caudill Southern on July 11, 1938, in Forsyth County, NC.
Johnny was a 1958 graduate of Hanes High School, a school that he loved deeply along with the friends he maintained even after graduating. He also loved baseball, coaching little league baseball at Mineral Springs for 15 years before becoming the equipment manager for the Vikings little league. Johnny was a devoted member of New Hope Baptist Church, where Dr. Charles" Chuck" Carver also became one of his dearest friends. Although, he did like to joke that he loved Chuck's wife more than Chuck himself. Johnny had a quick sense of humor, and lived a wonderful and full life throughout his 87 years.
In addition to his parents, Johnny was preceded in death by his son, John Southern Jr; and sisters, Sudie (Richard) Hudspeth and Betty (Robert) Hahn.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Clara Mae Southern; his daughter, Tammy (Don) Southern Cardwell; grandchildren, Tanner (Kristen) Cardwell, Nic (Kira) Cardwell, Amanda (Dan) Jones, Amber Cohn, Eli Cardwell and Zane Cardwell; and great-grandkids, Charlotte, Walter, Kai, Landon, Blakely, Alice, Avery, and Brewer.
A funeral service to honor the life of Johnny Southern will be held on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at 12:00PM at New Hope Baptist Church with Dr. Charles "Chuck" Carver officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will immediately follow the service at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown.
