Joseph Binkley

Joseph Gilmer Binkley, 86, of Clemmons, passed away October 19, 2017 at Forsyth Medical Center. Born April 11, 1931 in Iredell County, he was the son of the late Dewey T. Binkley and Maggie Carter Binkley. He graduated from Harmony High School in 1949 and Appalachian State Teacher's College with a bachelor's degree in 1953 and again from Appalachian State Teacher's College in 1960 with a Master's Degree in Education. His career began as a teacher in Reidsville. Gilmer served two years in the US Army beginning in 1954 during the Korean Conflict. Eighteen months were served in Japan. He then resumed teaching in Forsyth County, became a high school principal, and retired as an Assistant Superintendent for the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System. In 1956, he married his wife of 61 years, Harriet McAuley Binkley, who survives. He is also survived by a son, Joseph Lee Binkley (Maryan Ellis Binkley), a son-in-law, Vernon Russell Walker, a granddaughter, Stephanie Leigh Walker and a grandson, Joseph Samuel Walker. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister, Gertrude Binkley, a brother, Dwight Binkley, and a daughter, Sandra Binkley Walker. He was a faithful member of Lewisville United Methodist Church and sang in the choir for many years. Gilmer's roots kept him in farming after retirement and he was with his son many days either in a tractor or standing by to help. His hobbies also included hunting and fishing. A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, October 22, 2017 at Lewisville United Methodist Church with Dr. Ivan Peden and Rev. Susan Ewing officiating. Burial will be at 4:00 PM following the service at Holly Springs Baptist Church in Harmony, NC. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Lewisville Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Lewisville United Methodist Church, PO Box 305 Lewisville, NC 27023 or to Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 355 Houstonville Rd. West Harmony, NC 28634.
