Joseph Clyde “Pete” Chatman, 91, of Kernersville, NC, passed away peacefully November 3, 2023. He was born in Winston Salem, NC, July 6, 1932, to Pearl Welch and Joseph Franklin Chatman. Pete met the love of his life, Jo Ann Lawrence, in 1953. They were married July 9, 1955. Pete retired from First Federal Savings and Loan in 1991 after a 35 year career in banking. Pete was an active member of Kernersville Moravian Church since 1965 where he sang in the choir for over 40 years. He also served on various boards including the Board of Trustees and the Board of Elders. Pete was lovingly known as “Uncle Pete” to more than can be counted. He was an avid sports fan but especially enjoyed rooting for and supporting the Carolina Tar Heels. His greatest joy, however, was spending time with family. Pete had a soft spot for his four-legged furry friends, too numerous to mention, treating each and every one like the valuable family member they were. Pete is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Jo; his sister-in-law, Mary Jane “Janie” Welborn, with whom Pete and Jo shared so many of life’s adventure’s and special times; sister-in-law, Peggy Chatman; nephews: Marty Chatman (Sandra) and Brian Welborn (Susan); nieces: Lisa Chambers and Janice Terry (Bob); great nephews: Derrick Chambers (Amanda), Dean Chambers (Stephanie), and Davis Chatman (Marisa); great nieces: Savannah Satterfield (Zane), Holden Brown (Josh), Ivy Welborn, Emerson Welborn, and Lily Welborn; great-great nephews: Liam Chambers, Welborn Satterfield, Declan Satterfield, and Hutchinson Chatman; and great-great niece, Ella Chambers. Pete was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Bill Chatman and Lucille Chatman. A graveside service will be held December 2, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Kernersville Moravian Church. In the event of inclement weather, services will be held in the Kernersville Moravian Chapel. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
