Julia Spainhour

Ms. Julia Alma Spainhour, 85, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away on Wednesday, December 21, 2022.  Julia was born in Forsyth County on October 10, 1937, to the late John Walter Spainhour and Essie Pratt Spainhour.  Julia graduated from Northwest High School in 1954 and received a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Campbell College.  She spent her career in nonprofit, reaching the position of chief financial officer with the YWCA.  Julia saw the importance of volunteering and serving her community and volunteered for many years with Crisis Control Ministry in Winston-Salem.  Julia was a faithful member of Fries Memorial Moravian Church and served the church in numerous capacities as long as her health permitted.  She was a wonderful cook and her family enjoyed many of her famous dishes including Moravian chicken pie, spiced pound cake, and baklava.  In addition to her parents, Julia was preceded in death by her brothers, John A. Spainhour and Bobby Spainhour.  She is survived by her two daughters, Jenifer Lynn Peeden and husband, Mike and Allison B. Hart and loving partner, Brian de Lyon; one grandson, Dalton Gray Messer; and two great grandchildren, Jase Stover and Jackson Stover.  A service to celebrate Julia’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 7, 2023, at Fries Memorial Moravian Church with Rev. Dr. Worth Green officiating.  A private interment will follow at Salem Moravian Graveyard.  The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Friday, January 6, 2023, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.  The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of Village Care of King for the compassionate care they provided to Julia.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Crisis Control Ministry, 200 10th St. E, Winston-Salem, NC 27101; crisiscontrol.org/ways-to-give/financial-donation.html.
