June Norman Witty, 71 died Saturday, October 28,2017 at home. She was born July 17, 1946, one of three siblings born to Naomi Norman and Joshua William (Bill) Norman. June graduated from Southwest High School in 1964 and studied mathematics at UNCG and East Carolina University. She continued her education in civil engineering throughout her lifetime. She lived most of her life in Lewisville, NC, Columbia, SC and Clemmons, NC. She married her lifetime partner, James (Jimmy) Witty on December 1,1974. June was the second female engineer at Duke Power Co. in Charlotte. She then had a long career at Wilbur Smith and Associates. For over 35 years she enjoyed being a part of exciting projects such as designing the Botanical Gardens at the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia SC, the Hubbard Memorial Bridge in Greenville, SC. as well as an international assignment in Palestine in 2000.In the later years of her career she was a site designer for several airports and she was an active leader with the South Carolina Aviation Association. She was recognized for her leadership in NAWIC (National Association of Women in Construction) and received an award from the Governor's Office acknowledging her accomplishments for Women in Non-Traditional Careers. She was also active in the National Organization of Women and received many accolades for her contributions to equal rights for women in the work place. She was a lifelong member of Sharon United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Naomi as well as a niece, Carol Albert Foy and grandniece Sasha Johnson. She is survived by her husband Jimmy Witty, her sister Billie Albert (Rev. Thomas) and brother David Norman (Jane); four nieces and a nephew, Shannon Williams (Mike), Mandy Bennett (Kevin), Sarah Dralle (Gregg), and Josh Norman and his special friend, Stella May; five great nieces and nephews, Xander and Jonas Williams, Claira Johnson, and Anna and Parker Dralle, and a sister-in-law Linda Plummer (Gerry). She has three surviving aunts, Ruth Norman, Bernice Mabe,(Conrad)and Donna Beauchamp and five surviving uncles, Henry Norman(Mae), Walter Beauchamp, Clarence Beauchamp(Jean), Allen Beauchamp(Elaine), Mike Beauchamp (Miriam). A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, Nov. 4th, 2017, at Sharon United Methodist Church with Rev. Thomas Albert and Rev. Greg Freeman officiating. June had lifelong friends that she held dear and will be remembered as a kind and generous person.
