Katherine ""Kat"" Shugart Raker, 88, of Winston-Salem, passed away on Sunday, May 4th, 2014. A native and life-long resident of Winston-Salem, Katherine was a loving wife, and mother and a devoted servant to her family, her church of 88 years and her community. Katherine grew up in Oak Summit United Methodist Church and was an integral part of her church community, playing piano, singing in the choir, keeping church records and fundraising. After raising her children, Katherine worked for Hubbard Insurance retiring with honorable recognition in 1991. Katherine served her community as a cub scout den mother and volunteering with her husband Ike for 23 years delivering meals on wheels. She was an inspiration to everyone who knew her both spiritually and physically. Katherine spoke her truth to all who knew her, especially regarding her undying faith in God. She gave so much of herself to her husband and her mother through care giving. She leaves memories of her contagious humor, quiet but steadfast strength and faith to her children, grandchildren and her church community. Katherine Raker inspired us in so many ways but especially in her ability to give through quiet unassuming humility, never asking for recognition for her deeds of loving kindness.
Katherine Shugart Raker is survived by her son Mark Raker of Lewisville, NC, her daughter and son-in-law Melinda and Richard Halford of Black Mountain, NC, her son and daughter in-law Keith and Denise Raker of Cary, NC and her two grandsons Nathaniel and Garrett Raker, her adopted son in heart Greg Bacot of Lewisville, NC, her brother and sister-in-law Lamar and Dorothy Raker and many family members who loved her. Preceding her in death is her husband of 57 years Henry Lindsay ""Ike"" Raker.
