Katherine Sparks

Surrounded by loved ones and embraced by God’s grace, Katherine “Kitty” Woody Sparks passed away peacefully on November 22, 2025. Born September 14, 1924 in Mitchell County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Minnie G. Woody.

Kitty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Browne Sparks; her sister, Mildred Woody Cannon; and her brothers, Shelby Woody, James (“Jay”) Woody, and Russell Woody Jr.

She is survived by her daughter, LaNeta (Tom) Jones; grandson, Chris Jones; granddaughter, Carlynn (Kevin) Barefoot; great-grandson, Westen Barefoot; great-granddaughter, Autumn Barefoot; and many special nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.

A graduate of Tipton Hill High School, Kitty went on to attend Beauty School in Asheville, NC. Early in her career, she served her country during World War II by inspecting military transport planes. In 1954 she moved to Winston-Salem with her husband as he pursued his career. Kitty worked for Old City Hospital and later Forsyth Memorial, retiring after 38 years of dedicated service.

Kitty was an avid bowler whose passion took her to tournaments across the country. While still bowling with a 14lb ball well into her 70s, she finally hung up her bowling shoes at the age of 82. She was also well known for her exceptional cooking—especially her fried chicken, squash casserole, and pound cake. Those dishes, and many others, were often requested by her family because of how much love she poured into preparing them.

Her greatest joy was her family. She was always present and attentive, rarely wanting to talk about herself but always asking about others. She never missed the opportunity to take an active part in playing games with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whether it was board games or badminton. She was always busy in the background of family gatherings lending a helping hand.

Her second greatest joy was cheering for UNC basketball, a passion she never outgrew. Dean Smith was surely part of her heavenly welcome party given her unwavering dedication and support.

Our mom, Nanny, and “Bananie” will be greatly missed, but her love, strength, and kindness will live in our hearts forever.

A funeral service will be conducted 12:00 PM Saturday, November 29, 2025 at New Friendship Baptist Church by Pastor Chris Byrne. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Trinity Elms for the wonderful care and compassion they provided in her final years.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.
