Kathleen DeMay Cooper

Kathleen D. Cooper, RN, BSN, CDE passed away January 1, 2017 after a short battle with cancer. She was born September 23, 1946 to the late Joseph and Mabel DeMay. She attended college at the University of Michigan and graduated from Niagara University with a degree in Nursing (BSN). Kathleen worked as a nurse in many different capacities. She started her career in public health, then she moved on to teaching nursing students and finally to her passion as a certified diabetes educator working with children with Type 1 Diabetes at Baptist Hospital. She will be greatly missed by her family, co-workers, patients, and many others that she touched in her life. Her passion was not only treating Type 1 Diabetes, but walking side by side with the families dealing with this challenge. Mrs. Cooper always put her patients first, as her primary goal was to take care of their needs. She had many patients who traveled long distances to see her and she always went above and beyond to make appropriate accommodations for them. Mrs. Cooper is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Richard Halstead Cooper, Jr.; son, Christopher Cooper (Adrina) of Reno, Nevada; daughter, Shannon Archer (Chris) of Dawsonville, Georgia; five grandchildren, Zach, Kristen, Kaeley, Patrick, and Payton; also surviving is a sister, Karen Cameron (Nicholas) and a sister-in-law, Janet Grizzle (Buzz). A celebration of life service will be held in the future. The family would like to thank the nurses on 4 Reynolds ICU/Baptist Hospital and particularly, Ashley Brown, RN for their loving care of Kathie.
