Larry Richard Rhodes, Sr., passed away Friday, September 6th, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Lee County on May 15th, 1948, to the late Burchell Rhodes and Irene Stanley Rhodes. If asked to describe Mr. Rhodes (also known by many as "Pops"), it would he "hardworking", "helping", and "loving". Never afraid to do things that needed to be done, quick to help someone in need, and loving his family unconditionally. If you had the chance to meet him, you were embraced with his sense of humor that could brighten a room, lighten a mood and make anyone laugh. His ministry was helping others, and bringing a smile to their face. After serving our country in the US Army as a Sergeant during Vietnam, Mr. Rhodes was awarded the Bronze Star and Commendation Medal for his heroic acts. We are thankful for his service, sacrifice, and continued love of our country. Larry retired from UPS as a District Automotive Manager, with 25 years of service. During his "retirement" years, he found plenty of ways to stay busy. From working on his farm, fishing, growing a large garden, helping his kids and others with projects; to just enjoying time with his family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Donna Edwards Rhodes. When asked what makes a marriage last this long? Her answer is simple, "Jesus and Chocolate". In addition, he is survived by his two sons, Larry "Rick" Rhodes, Jr and wife Angie of Oak Ridge; Michael Rhodes, and wife Ann of Greensboro; Grandkids: Chase Rhodes (Sydney), Tyler Rhodes (Jeane), Chloe Rhodes, and Shelby Rhodes; Great-Grandaughter: Kynlee Rhodes; Brothers: Ray Rhodes (Mary), Bill Rhodes (Annette); Sister: Hilda Rosser (Lynn); and a host of extended family and friends whom he loved dearly.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, September 14th, 2024, at Calvary Church, 1665 Pleasant Ridge Rd. Greensboro, NC 27409, with Scott Truhe officiating. The family will receive friends at 1:00pm at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Calvary Triad Kingdom Builders 1665 Pleasant Ridge Rd. Greensboro, NC 27409; or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105 (or online). Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel is assisting the family.
