Larry "Smut" David Smothers

Larry David Smothers, who preferred to be called Smut or Dave, passed away on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center. He had his 74th birthday on July 16 while hospitalized.

He was born on July 16, 1951, in Winston-Salem, NC, to Horace Victor Smothers Sr. and Edna Kimel Smothers.

Smut joined the Army and was mainly stationed at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. While in the Army, he was a member of the winning softball team, which he was very proud of. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he became a salesman. He later started his own successful business, Dave’s Executive Transportation. He formed many personal relationships during this time. Unfortunately, COVID occurred and caused him to close his business.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Dick Smothers and Kay Hyler; niece, Tammy Smothers; and great-nephew, Chris Mueller. He is survived by his siblings, Ramona Jane Sechrist, Rick Woollen (Dr. Kay Woollen); nieces, Dr. Christen Lee (Chris) and Dr. Elizabeth Woollen; nephew, Vic Smothers and his family; sister-in-law, Brenda Smothers; and his favorite cat, Little John.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, August 16, 2025, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to his favorite charity, the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.
