Mr. Larry “Sonny” Dennis Simmons, 80, of Winston-Salem passed away on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Elkin on October 18, 1938 to Lawrence and Louisine Gerringer Simmons. Mr. Simmons was of the Baptist faith and a retired brick mason and landscaper. Sonny was an avid Nascar and country music fan, especially of the late Dale Earnhardt and George Jones. He was preceded in death by his parents; Aunt and Uncle, Dewey and Kat Widener whom he thought of as parents; a great granddaughter, Rose Irene Moss. Surviving are his life partner, Sue Plott; two sons, Dennis Simmons and wife Debbie, Danny Simmons; step-daughter, Lynn Butner and husband Gary; six grandchildren, Allison, Casey, Brandon, Daniel Simmons, Dustin Butner and wife Amanda, Ashley Moss and husband Timothy; eight great grandchildren, Tyler, Kayleigh, Caden, Ryder, Noah, Maci, Grace, and Faith; one sister, Marion Maines and husband Roger; numerous cousins who he considered siblings. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Elkin with Rev. Jack Hutchins officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until 12:00 Noon on Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family would like to thank the staff at Forsyth Medical Center for the loving care shown to Sonny during his time in the hospital.
