WINSTON SALEM - Lawrence ""Buck"" Melvin Merritt, Jr., 91, passed away Wednesday, January 20, 2016 of cancer. Lawrence was born July 13, 1924 in Forsyth County to Lawrence Melvin Merritt, Sr. and Eva Kiser Merritt. He graduated from Gray High School in 1942 and attended Princeton and Perdue Universities. He was employed by Western Electric Company as a Quality Assurance Engineer. Lawrence was a WWII Veteran of the Army Air Force and served in the Air Force Reserves as a Master Sargent. He was an active member of Sedge Garden United Methodist Church where he was very dedicated to the Chancel Choir. In addition to his parents, Lawrence was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Merritt and his wife, Dorothy. Surviving are his wife, Lois Faircloth Merritt; one son, Larry Phillip Merritt (wife, Bev); one daughter, Deborah Watkins (husband, Stan) all of Charlotte; grandchildren, Phillip Merritt of Ft. Myers, FL, Wendy Larrabee (husband, James) of Wilmington, Andrea Rigby of Cameron, and Lisa Knowles (husband, Jeff) of Oakland, CA; 3 great grandchildren, Jordan, Nathan and Katilyn Larrabee; one brother, Bill Merritt (wife, Peggy); two sisters, Frances Hayes and Barbara Griggs (husband, Garland). A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church with Rev. Dave Cash officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:00 - 1:20 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Sedge Garden UMC - Choir Fund, 794 Sedge Garden Rd, Kernersville, NC 27284. Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel is assisting the family.
