Laymond Martin “Marty” Flippin passed away on Sunday April 27th at the age of 78 after a long battle against cancer. His devoted and faithful daughter, Denisa, was by his side then as she has been over the last few years as his primary caregiver. He is survived by Denisa (Kent) and his son Michael (Rachel) and his grandsons Robert and Henry.
Born soon after the end of World War II, Laymond and his siblings overcame a challenging environment in rural North Carolina to achieve the American Dream. Despite losing his father when he was two, his family raised him with what he called a “profound belief in God, family, and country” that as the foundation of his life.
Laymond was a dedicated public servant during a long career in military and federal law enforcement that started in the Vietnam War era. In retirement, he spent many years helping elderly veterans navigate the federal government to the awards and benefits they were owed. He was a lifelong animal lover and avid sports fan who also enjoyed playing guitar and experimenting in the kitchen.
A funeral service will be held at Western Carolina State Veterans’ Cemetery with Chaplain Jack Taylor officiating.
His family asks that instead of flowers, donations be made to Trellis Supportive Care of Winston Salem or Tunnel to Towers in his honor.
