Winston-SalemLillie ""Marie"" Carter Thomas was welcomed into her heavenly home, Tuesday, December 24 at 4:00 PM. Our mother and loving ""nanny"" to her grandchildren, rejoices to spend Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and eternity with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Marie 86 years old, enjoyed many happy years at her home in Winston-Salem until a most recent stroke. Her family would like to thank the staff for the care given to her at The Oaks, Liberty Hospice and especially Belinda James, RN. Marie was born to parents, William Carter and Velma Garner Carter on July 4, 1927 in New Hanover County. She was the fourth of seven children. On May 19, 1946 she married Stanley J. Thomas, Sr. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Stanley J. Thomas, Jr. (Jesse) and Brenda Joyce. She is survived by her son, Jesse Thomas and wife Martha Marie of W-S; grandson, Brian Thomas and wife, Lisa of Mocksville; granddaughter, Carolyn Thomas Kimball and husband, Mike and great-grandchildren, Mariah, Thomas, and Savanah Kimball of W-S; her daughter, Brenda Joyce Thomas Bailey of W-S; granddaughter, Dawn Bailey Baca and husband, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Rosa and Ethan Baca of W-S; grandson, Gary Bailey of VA and great-grandchildren, Britteny Bailey and Mikayla Bailey; two sisters, Cindy Mach of Texas and Sarah Stiles of Florida; brother-in-law, Gene Masini and wife Lois of SC, and many dear nieces and nephews in the Wilmington area. Marie worked for R.J. Reynolds, later to be a full time homemaker and ""second mama"" to many children whom she kept in her home. She and her husband loved to grow and can their own vegetables. Her homemade cakes and sour dough rolls were a delicious treat for any occasion. She loved flowers, especially red geraniums in the summer. Sister Marie was a faithful member of Kerwin Church of God of Prophecy, now called Life Impact Church at Fishel and South Main St. She loved her Lord, singing in the choir and praising his name. Marie read God's word daily, striving to learn more while studying his word. Marie was a Sunday School Teacher for many years. As her eyesight failed, a few years ago near her birthday, the family replaced her badly worn Bible; pages falling out, with a new leather bound large print bible. Marie was so proud of her new bible; she took it to church and showed everyone. She commented how good it was to clearly see God's word. I recently noticed that now the new bible was looking worn and pages were starting to curl. Are our bibles worn or only dusty? Marie would say, ""Blow off the dust and start reading God's word for our lives today."" A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, December 28, 2013 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Gardens of Memory, 3250 High Point Rd., W-S, NC 27107. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to her church, Life Impact Church COGOP, 5090 South Main St. W-S, NC 27107 or her son's church, Advent Moravian Church, 1514 W. Clemmonsville Rd.
