Lois Wiles Handy

Mrs. Lois Wiles Handy, 100, of Winston-Salem, passed away on Sunday, November 20, 2016, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Handy was born in Wilkes County, NC on May 12, 1916, to the late Doctor Gordon Wiles and Caroline Nancy Myers Wiles. She graduated in 1933 from North Wilkesboro High School and worked in the office and as an operator at Wilkes County Telephone Company until her marriage in 1940. Lois was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church. Her most important role in life was as a wife and homemaker. She was a wonderful cook and famous for her homemade biscuits and buttermilk pie. Lois was an avid gardener and she had a special green thumb for all kinds of flowers and she also enjoyed spending time crocheting and knitting. Lois was NASCAR's oldest fan, and especially loved Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and never missed a race. In addition to her parents, Lois was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Lawrence J. Handy, Sr.; three brothers and five sisters. Lois is survived by her children, Dr. Thomas G. Handy (Elaine), Lois Ellen Handy, and L.J. Handy, Jr., all of Winston-Salem; grandchildren, Dr. T. Gordon Handy, Jr. (Holly) of Lewisville, NC, Nikki Brant (Dr. Andy Brant) of Morganton, NC, Dr. Michael Handy (Laura) of Greensboro, NC, Gabriel Handy (Heather) of Brooklyn, NY, Caroline Handy of Winston-Salem, and Rachael Handy of Winston-Salem and their mother, Tracy Handy; and great-grandchildren, Thomas Gordon Handy III, Banks Handy, Salem Handy, Wilson Handy, Riggs Handy, Burns Handy, Sims Handy, Ethan Brant, and Alex Brant. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 26, 2016, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Cecil Cave officiating. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Lois was loved and cherished by her family and all who knew her. Her beautiful smile, gentle spirit, and great love of her family will be greatly missed. She was a true angel that God so graciously gave to us for 100 years on this precious Earth.
