Lois Merritt

WINSTON SALEM - Lois Faircloth Merritt, 91, died Monday, December 4, 2017 at Forsyth Medical Center. Lois was born on July 22, 1926 in Sampson County to Alfonza and Mary Katie Faircloth. Lois attended Lawton High School in Oklahoma and Rochester Business Institute in Rochester, NY. She was employed with the Veterans Administration as a secretary in Winston-Salem before raising her family. Lois was a very loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed painting landscapes and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Associated Artists of Winston-Salem during her painting years. She was a member of Sedge Garden United Methodist Church where she was active in the choir. Lois also sang in the chorus for the local Handel's Messiah performances for over 30 years along with her husband, Lawrence Merritt. She loved baking pies for her family, church events, and friends. She was especially known for her chocolate pies that we all enjoyed over the years. In addition to her parents, Lois was preceded in death by her loving husband, Lawrence Merritt, Jr.; and her sisters, Juantine Hepler and Christine Markland. Surviving are her son, Larry Merritt (wife, Bev); her daughter, Debbie Watkins (Stan); grandchildren, Phillip Merritt, Wendy Larrabee (James), Andrea Rigby (Kevin Coppel), and Lisa Rigby (Jeff Knowles); and great-grandchildren, Jordan, Nathan, and Kaitlyn Larrabee. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 8, 2017 at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church with Rev. George Freeman and Rev. Karen Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to SECU Family House, 1970 Baldwin Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel is assisting the family.
