Mrs. Louise Ziglar Joyce of Bermuda Run died Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at Bermuda Village Nursing Center.
Louise was born January 22, 1926 to the late Troy Edgar and Velma Shelton Ziglar in Sandy Ridge, N.C. She graduated from Salem College in 1947 with a degree in Home Economics and minor in Chemistry and remained an enthusiastic alumna the rest of her life. After graduating college, she taught high school in Sandy Ridge. She married James Louis ""Lou"" Joyce on September 11, 1948, and began working as the Forsyth County Home Extension Agent, where she taught hundreds to cook, sew, preserve food, and manage a household. When Lou was transferred to Burlington, Louise found her true calling volunteering within the community. For the rest of her life, she remained dedicated to the service of others. She joined the Burlington Woman's Club and eventually held all available offices. She helped found the Burlington Woman's Club Thrift Shop and their Senior Citizens Center, and enriched the lives of children with developmental disabilities through her work at Camp Green Leaves. With Lou's transfer back to Winston-Salem, she began volunteering at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital. She found particular joy in helping families in their time of need. When Louise ""retired"" from service at Baptist, she had accumulated over 26,000 volunteer hours - the second highest of any volunteer at that time. Louise was an active member of the Clemmons Moravian Church for over 30 years, serving as a diener during Lovefeasts, making chicken pies to raise funds for the church, and volunteering in countless other service programs. Lou and Louise were married for 54 years before his passing in 2002.
Louise was preceded in death by her parents, Troy and Velma Ziglar; her husband, Lou Joyce; and her sister, Nancy Ziglar Hicks of Walnut Cove. She is survived by her son, James Louis Joyce, Jr. (wife Patti) of Clemmons, and her daughter Mary Louise Joyce (MJ) Shaffer (husband Chuck) of Walnut Cove, as well as her five grandchildren: Christina Joyce Stover, Michael Joyce, Annalee Shaffer, Chip Shaffer, and Virginia Shaffer.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Saturday, July 29th, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel (in the Kinderton Commercial Village, Hwy. 158 across from Bermuda Run Country Club). The funeral service will be conducted by Reverend Ray Burke at 2 pm Sunday, July 30th, at Clemmons Moravian Church. Burial will be at the Clemmons Moravian Church graveyard followed by a reception in the church fellowship hall. Memorials in her memory may be made to the Clemmons Moravian Church Building Fund, Box 730, Clemmons, NC 27012; to the Wake Forest School of Medicine Alzheimer's Disease Core Center; or to the Salem College Office of Institutional Advancement, 601 South Church Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101.
