Luther Combs

Stokesdale - Mr. Luther "Norman" Combs, 90, of Stokesdale, went to sing in the Lord's eternal choir on Thursday, September 28, 2017. Norman was born August 31, 1927 to Luther Pepper and Della Pegram Combs. He was born on a farm, in rural Stokesdale. Norman grew up knowing how to work hard early in life. He met the love of his life, Ruby Stack, on June 10, 1949 whom he later married in February 1953. He instilled in his children and grandchildren a love for family and the simpler things in life. He will always be remembered for his infectious laughter, random bursts of hymns, trips to the "little" store in his Chevy pickup for his Pepsi and nabs, and his quiet way to show he cared without ever using words. Norman was a lifelong member of Bethel United Methodist Church. Dedicated to his family, one would often find Norman sitting in his backyard swing enjoying a "chew". He was supported in his final years with unending support from a very loving, extended family, his many friends, a caring church, and exceptional caregivers.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six siblings, Lloyd, Pauline, Avalee, Eva, Mabel, and Evelyn.
Surviving are his loving wife, Ruby Stack Combs; daughter, Pamela Gentilezza (Arnold) of Salt Lake City, Utah; son, Dale Norman Combs (Lisa) of Kernersville; granddaughters, Julie Combs (Nicholas Buss) and Zoe Gentilezza; sister, Mary Blackburn.
A funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, October 1, 2017 at Bethel United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge with Rev. L. Alan Mears officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM, Saturday, September 30, at the Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel.
