Mabel Louise Hayth Fainter

Mrs. Mabel Louise Hayth Fainter, 93, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2017. She was born on November 28, 1923, to the late John Edward Hayth and Luella (Lutie) Rice Hayth in the town of Buchanan, county of Botetourt, Virginia. She was predeceased by a brother, Elwood Hayth, two sisters, Ruth M. Hayth Eubank and Edna M. Hayth Todd, and her loving husband of 44 years, James Robert Fainter. She is survived by one son, Robert Gaffney and his wife, Lily Kohlweiss Fainter of Greenville, North Carolina; niece Ammie Todd Conner of Alexandria, Virginia and her family; nephews William W. K. Todd, III of Roanoke, Virginia and James Edward Eubank of Buchanan, Virginia and their families; Betty Fainter Mikels and husband Lloyd of Falls Church, Virginia; Eugene (Jack) Fainter and wife Gwen of Natural Bridge Station, Virginia and their families; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and special friend Kitsy Mathis of Winston-Salem. She was the first of her family to achieve post-secondary education when she was awarded Honors of Graduation in Secretarial Science from National Business College in Roanoke, Virginia. Mrs. Fainter was a veteran of World War II, having enlisted in the United States Navy in 1944. She was stationed aboard Treasure Island, San Francisco, California and rose to the rank of Yeoman 2nd Class. She received an Honorable Discharge at the end of the war in 1946. After marrying in 1947, her new family was mobile for many of the early years. She created homes for her husband and son in El Paso, Texas, Buena Vista and Roanoke, Virginia, Glen Burnie, Maryland, and Jacksonville, Florida before the family finally settled in Winston-Salem in 1961. In addition to making a home for her family, she worked as a bookkeeper for Hake Manufacturing Company of Roanoke, Virginia, and as an office manager for Electrolux in Winston-Salem. In the late 1960s, she was the Executive Assistant for Renn Enterprises, Ltd, of Winston-Salem. She was a long-time member of Winston-Salem's Southside Baptist Church, where her Sunday school class was the center for her church life. She served as Church Hostess for many years and used her administrative and business talents serving on the Board of Deacons, the Dorcas Committee and the Finance Committee. For many Christmas seasons, she played the part of an angel in Southside's presentation of a living Nativity Scene. When she wasn't spreading her wings over ""Bethlehem,"" she served hot refreshments to other shivering cast members. She was active in the Walter C. Kearns Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. During her tenure in the chapter, she served several terms in all offices, including Worthy Matron. For many years, she enjoyed decorating cakes and ran a cottage business making wedding and birthday cakes. She won a Blue Ribbon for cake decorating at the Dixie Classic Fair in 1968. Even though she claimed not to be able to draw a straight line, she spent many years painting pastoral scenes and landscapes of North Carolina's beaches, Virginia's mountains, and Arizona's vast deserts. She loved watching baseball and spent her last years as an ardent, knowledgeable fan of the Atlanta Braves. Mrs. Fainter wishes to thank the caring staff and administration of Trinity Elms Health and Rehab for all their efforts to keep her comfortable and safe during her two and a half years there. In addition, she also wishes to thank the dedicated nurses and personnel of the Hospice and Palliative Carecenter for their comfort and care during her last days. A graveside service will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, July 13, 2017, at Parklawn Memorial Park with Rev. Beth Woodard of Trinity Elms Health and Rehab officiating. In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Fainter requests that donations be made to Trinity Elms Health and Rehab, 7449 Fair Oaks Drive, Clemmons, NC, 27012 and/or Hospice & Palliative Carecenter, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
