WINSTON-SALEM. NC-Mrs. Mae Ayers Mayes, 89, of Winston-Salem, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 18, 2014 at Abbotts Creek Center in Lexington. Mrs. Mayes was born on April 22, 1925 in Carroll County, VA to the late Commodore D. Ayers and Frances Thomas Ayers. She worked at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company for 26 years. After she left R.J. Reynolds she went on to own and operate Robinhood Grocery for several years. Mae was a member of Meadowview Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed being outdoors and working in her yard. Mae had a big heart and an everlasting love for her family and her church and will be deeply missed by all. In addition to her parents, Mae was preceded in death by her first husband, James S. Money, Sr., second husband, Clyde Wade Mayes; three brothers, Bobby Ayers, Emmit Ayers, and Thomas Ray Ayers; her twin sister, Marie Ayers and one other sister, Garnetta Josephine Ayers Martin; and two sons-in-law, Bill Williams and Tony Matthews. Mrs. Mayes is survived by her son, James S. Money, Jr. and wife, Ronda of Lexington, NC; two daughters, Linda Money Williams of Havana, FL and Rachel Money Matthews of Thomasville, NC; four grandchildren, Angela Rhodes and husband, Rick of Thomasville, NC, James S. Money, III and wife, Denise of Winston-Salem, Scottie Williams of Havana, FL, and Jeremy S. Money and wife, Liz of Welcome, NC; four great-grandchildren, Chase Rhodes, Tyler Rhodes, Eden Money and Jillian Money; one brother, Garnett Ayers and wife, Nancy of Winston-Salem; and two sisters, Alice Hutchens of Kernersville, NC and Betty Holifield and husband, Bill of Winston-Salem, NC. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, December 22, 2014 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Pastor Robert Hutchens officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Meadowview Baptist Church, 105 Nathan Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27107. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
