Marika (Marianthe) Bobocharis Canavos passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 8, 2017 at Levine & Dickson Hospice House. She was born on April 30, 1930 in Karpenisi Greece to Artemicia and Demetrios Bobocharis. She is survived by two children, George and Alexandra and two grandchildren, Dimitri and Dennis and two sisters, Loula and Fotini and brother, Argiri. She is preceded by her husband, Reverend Father Dennis her parents and a brother, John and sister, Violeta. Her father owned the town's only bakery and was a very generous and successful young man for that time. The family unfortunately went from riches to rags during World War II when their home and business were burned to the ground. They were homeless for a while but managed to live off their garden and learned how to knit to keep warm.
Marika's mother secretly allowed her and her sister, Fotini, to attend sewing classes. The two sisters then came to the United States in order to help their family in Greece. They came to Winston-Salem by ship with very little money and did not speak English. They lived with relatives and worked as tailors at Miss White's Sewing Shop in downtown Winston-Salem. Marika met Dennis Chris Canavos at a Greek Convention in June, 1958 and they were married on October 19th that same year. Marika was a homemaker for the majority of her life. After raising her children, she worked for several years at Robert's Uniforms as a tailor with her sister, Fotini. Marika was an awesome cook and a devoted Christian in the Greek Orthodox Church. Her husband was ordained in 1978 and was the Priest in High Point for over 35 years. Marika was widowed in 2009 after 50 years of marriage. Marika was a kind, loving, and beautiful graceful woman. She had seen wars and had experienced famine but persevered. She came to the United States and worked hard. With her husband, they broke the poverty cycle. Her faith in God led her every step of the way. The family will receive friends from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm, Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Winston-Salem with a Trisagion service conducted at 12:00 pm. The funeral will take place at 1:00 pm Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church with Father Demetri Kangelaris officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Levine & Dickson Hospice House, 11900 Vanstory Dr. Huntersville, NC 28078. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
