Marina H. Nowell was born in Henderson, NC on February 10, 1923. She was in the first class of women to attend Wake Forest College and graduated in 1943 with a major in chemistry. She married a classmate, Robert Elliott Nowell in 1949 and they moved to Winston-Salem. Marina worked at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in the clinical laboratories until her retirement and made many wonderful friends there. In addition to reading and crossword puzzles, Marina’s hobby was horses and she had several special ones. She also made lasting friendships with people at the horse barn at Tanglewood Farms. She was a lifelong, loyal Wake Forest fan and member of the Deacon Club since 1958. She especially liked basketball and never missed a game or left early, no matter what the score was. She was a guest coach for the women’s basketball team on several occasions, including a celebration for her 100th birthday. Marina was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Nowell. Marina is survived by her children, Robert Nowell, Jr. and his husband William Vaillancourt, Margaret Nowell and Betsy Nowell, as well as her sister, Kathryn Edwards, a niece, Kathy Foster and her husband Wade and cousins Julia Williams and her husband Roy and Thomas Hawkins and his wife Brenda.
The family wishes to thank the amazing staff at Bermuda Village and Trellis Supportive Care for their compassionate care during Marina’s time there.
