Marvin Carl Lunsford

Mr. Marvin Carl Lunsford, 93, died at home on Sunday, February 23, 2014. He was born on August 3, 1920 in Henry County, Indiana to James Fountain and Myrtle Cleek Lunsford. He moved to North Carolina in 1938 and married Claudia Simpson on January 17, 1942. He left to serve his country in July 1942. He served three years in the European Theater of War in the Signal Corp attached to the 8th Air Force and was awarded the Bronze Star. Mr. Lunsford had been a faithful member of Union Ridge United Methodist Church since 1941, where he enjoyed singing in the choir. He was preceded in death by a son, Marvin (Bud) Lunsford, Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth (Lib) Lunsford; a son-in-law, Joseph Davis; a grandson, James Lunsford; a sister, Margie Groves, of Winter Haven, FL; and two brothers, Dallas Lunsford, of Cambridge City, IN and James Lunsford, of North Palm Beach, FL. Marvin is survived by his wife, Claudia, of 72 years; a son, Jack Lunsford and wife Janet of Chesterfield, VA; a daughter, Sherry Davis of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Jeff Lunsford and wife Kim of Newport News, VA, Jennifer Keller and husband Pat of Midlothian, VA, John Lunsford and wife Kristin of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Rory and Ross Davis of Winston-Salem; three great grandchildren, Campbell Lunsford and Sydney and Nathan Keller; and a sister Mary Lou Smith of Manchester, KY. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Union Ridge United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary Elrod officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 1:00 to 2:00 PM prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Union Ridge United Methodist Church, 3620 Old Lexington Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27107.
